<br />
We began as always with Welcome & Check-in time. The question for today was "what did you do last weekend?" Some sample answers:<br />
<br />
<ul><li>I watched the movie <u>Saw</u></li>
<li>I watched the new <u>Pirates of the Caribbean</u> movie</li>
<li>I slept for 12 hours</li>
<li>I got a haircut</li>
</ul><br />
After Welcome and Check-In, students read and listened to three American poems:<br />
<blockquote><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="clear: right; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://bookpeopleblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/billycollins1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://bookpeopleblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/billycollins1.jpg" width="133" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Billy Collins</td></tr>
</tbody></table><strong></strong></blockquote><br />
<blockquote><strong>"The Crocodile's Toothache"</strong> by Shel Silverstein (read that <a href="http://www.qu-i-x.com/crocodile.html">here</a>, watch it <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN8PfuyowG0">here</a>) </blockquote><blockquote><strong>"The Raven"</strong> by Edgar Allen Poe (read an e-book <a href="http://www.keepreading.us/raven/book.cfm">here</a>, watch the Simpsons version <a href="http://vodpod.com/watch/1304748-the-raven-on-the-simpsons">there</a>, read about Poe in Korean <a href="http://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/%EC%97%90%EB%93%9C%EA%B1%B0_%EC%95%A8%EB%9F%B0_%ED%8F%AC">here</a>)</blockquote><blockquote><strong>"The Country"</strong> by Billy Collins (watch and listen to the animated poetry <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xovLpim_1s">here</a>)</blockquote><br />
<br />
<br />
Then, each student worked with a partner to write a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;"><b>couplet</b></span>. Examples will be posted on this blog!<br />

For example, if you forget the word <b>calendar, </b>you might say "it's something you use to know the date" or "it's something you use to remember appointments."<br />
<div><br />
</div><div>Also, we talked about the idiom "<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;">in other words</span></b>," which helps us describe things. You can use it to describe something in two ways, to say the same meaning with different words.<br />
<div><div><blockquote>1.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Example: “He’s ecstatic. <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;">In other words</span>,</b> he’s very happy.”<br />
2.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Example: “She’s a librarian. <b> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;">In other words</span>,</b> she’s someone who works at a library.”</blockquote><div>We began with the question "what is something that you do every day before school?" <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;">In other words</span></b>, "what do you always do before school?"</div><div><br />
</div><div>In my class, I prefer to <b>define </b>words, <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;">in other words</span></b>, to <b>explain the meaning</b>, rather than give the Korean translation. Although it’s easier for me to say “Definition: 정의,” you will learn better if I say “Definition: an explanation of the meaning of a word.”</div><div><br />
</div><div>Here are some ways to describe nouns:</div><div><div><br />
</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>Person</b>: This is someone who __________s</span></div><div><b>Example</b>: This is someone who catches criminals and stops crime.</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: xx-small;"><br />
</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>Person </b>(only 1): This is the person who __________s</span></div><div><b>Example</b>: This is the person who sings “Poker Face.”</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: xx-small;"><br />
</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>Place</b>: This is somewhere you can _______</span></div><div><b>Example</b>: This is somewhere you can prepare food in your house.</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: xx-small;"><br />
</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>Thing</b>: This is something you ___________</span></div><div><b>Example</b>: This is something you eat in Korea on the 3 hottest days of the summer.</div></div><div><br />
</div><div>To practice describing/defining nouns in English, we played a game.</div><div>Each team got a paper with 3 nouns on it, and one blank space. In the blank space, the table chose a person, place, or thing to describe.</div><div>Teams had 5 minutes to write and 5 minutes to edit (especially articles & subject-verb agreement) a description of their noun. </div><div>Then each group read 2 of their definitions, and other groups guessed what was being defined. Stickers to whomever guessed correctly!</div></div></div></div><div><br />
</div><div>Here are a few example descriptions. Can you guess what noun they were describing?</div><div>1. This is the person who is the current president of the USA.</div><div>2. This is somewhere you can see the Vice Principal.</div><div>3. This is something you use to eat noodles, rice, and other food.</div>Miss Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02920479788124627672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004501431849148731.post-32519143799574525212011-03-14T23:15:00.000-07:002011-03-27T23:31:01.457-07:00Grammarball!<div style="text-align: left;">Today's idiom was "get your head in the game!" It means "you should focus."</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="http://www.printedclothing.com/shack/contents/media/pc515%20get%20your%20head%20in%20the%20game.jpg" border="0" alt="" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 383px; height: 383px; " /></span></div><div>For example, in High School Musical, Troy should focus on basketball. During basketball practice, he's thinking about a girl and about singing. His basketball would improve if he would "get his head in the game." Watch the video for "Get Your Head in the Game" <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TspDkbq9WM">here</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Today, we also played Grammarball! Grammarball is a great game that focuses on practicing The Big Three. In Grammarball, you have a scrambled sentence. You must order the words, change the verb, and add any missing articles. For example:</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><b>"boy / English / handsome / well / [to speak]"</b></span> must become <span class="Apple-style-span"><b>"<span class="Apple-style-span">The </span>handsome boy <span class="Apple-style-span">speaks </span>English well."</b></span></div><div><br /></div>Miss Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02920479788124627672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004501431849148731.post-78694409488512918022011-03-14T23:02:00.000-07:002011-04-04T19:41:52.900-07:00The Big Three<div style="text-align: center;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">The Big Three</span></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span"><br />

In this song, Bruno gives his girlfriend compliments. He thinks she is beautiful, smart, and has a sexy laugh. But she is not confident, and she rejects his compliments. He is disappointed because she does not accept his compliments.<br /><br />Korean people and American people use compliments differently.<br /><br />In <span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">Korean </span>culture, it is very common to reject a compliment, like this:<span style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0);"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></span><blockquote><span style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0);"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Girl 1:</span> You look pretty with your hair up like that.</span><br /><span style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0);"> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Girl 2</span>: No, I don't. I look like an old woman.</span></blockquote><br />But in <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">American </span>culture, it is less common. Americans use compliments<br /><br />Instead, Americans often <span style="font-weight: bold;">return a compliment</span>, like this:<br /><span style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102);"></span></span></span><blockquote><span style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102);">Girl 1:</span></span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102);"> You look pretty with your hair up like that.</span></span><br /><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102);"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Girl 2</span>: Thanks. Your hair looks great, too. </span></blockquote><br />Americans also often respond by <span style="font-weight: bold;">adding information</span> to help <span style="font-weight: bold;">continue the conversation</span>, like this:<br /><span style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102);"></span></span></span><blockquote><span style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102);">Girl 1:</span></span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102);"> You look pretty with your hair up like that.</span></span><br /> <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102);"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Girl 2</span>: Thanks. I got it cut at a new place near my apartment. They're great - would you like to come with me next time?</span> </blockquote>Americans often use compliments to <span style="font-weight: bold;">begin conversation</span> or <span style="font-weight: bold;">build friendship</span>.<br /><br />To learn more about comparing <span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">Korean </span>and <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 102);">American </span>compliment styles, look at the article outside the English classroom. It reviews scientific studies on <span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">Korean </span>and <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">American</span> compliments.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">To watch Bruno Mars' "Just the Way You Are" video again, click </span><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjhCEhWiKXk&feature=channel"><span style="font-size:130%;">here.</span></a>Miss Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02920479788124627672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004501431849148731.post-2827293347817616562010-09-12T14:28:00.000-07:002010-10-18T23:06:41.128-07:00Reviews of "Mine"Today, we read excerpts (pieces) of reviews of Taylor Swift's song "Mine."<br />Then, we wrote our own reviews.<br /><br />Each student wrote a short review saying his or her opinion, and also chose a review to agree or disagree with.<br />There are 4 review excerpts. Each pair of students chose 2 to read and 1 to agree/disagree with in their review.<br /><br />Click "Read more" to see the example reviews from class:<br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Billboard </span>- If the rest of Taylor Swift's highly anticipated new album is as strong as its finely crafted lead single, then it's a sure bet that her career will continue.<br />"Mine" has a vibrant energy that perfectly complements her passionate vocals. As the artist matures personally and professionally, the song demonstrates that she's successfully transitioning from a teen ingenue writing about high school crushes to a young woman exploring adult relationships. Swift is a master at creating memorable lines, and one of the standouts here is, "You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter." "Mine" is not so heavy that she'll lose any of her young fans, but there's lyrical substance wrapped in the joyful melody that shows Swift has the talent to go the distance and continue to broaden her audience.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Jezebel.com</span> The video fits the “Taylor Swift brand” perfectly, but I wonder -- for an artist who has earned so many fans based on her confessional lyrics and her ability to seem relatable to her fans, there’s something kind of strange about the whole thing. Does anyone really think that 20-year-old millionaire Taylor Swift is having fights with her husband and worrying about having ‘bills to pay?’<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">BBC</span><br />The Good: It’s a true Taylor Swift country love song. She sings about a couple who went to college together and about all the fun they had. The words and melody of the song are catchy; the more you listen to it, the more you'll remember it. Everyone will want to sing along, though it will probably be more popular with her female fans. Taylor Swift masters details in her lyrics, and the "drawer of my things at your place," and being followed into the street at 2:30 a.m. make "Mine" feel like an honest song about a serious romance.<br /><br />The Bad: Taylor Swift seems to have a scientific formula for musical success. Almost all of her songs sound exactly the same. This song is too similar to “Love Story” and “You Belong With Me.” Her fans will probably like this song, because it sounds so similar to her earlier music, but she won’t gain any new fans.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">MTV </span>Unlike many other young pop stars, Taylor Swift has an old style idea of romance. For Taylor Swift, the most romantic dream is marriage and children. This makes her very different from, for example, Britney Spears or Katy Perry. Whether you like this song will probably depend on if you identify more with the dream of marriage and children or late-night partying and drinking.Miss Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02920479788124627672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004501431849148731.post-78035636457439974652010-09-10T01:32:00.000-07:002010-10-06T01:56:07.789-07:00Music Monday: Taylor Swift "Mine"This week, students listened to Taylor Swift's new song, "Mine."<br />In it, Taylor Swift imagines what her life will be like in the future. She imagines that she is happily married with children and looking at the past. She imagines that when life is difficult, they will sit together and remember the happy history of their love together.<br /><br />Here is a picture from the video, of Taylor Swift's imagined husband and son:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://cdn.buzznet.com/media/jjr//2010/08/swift-mine/taylor-swift-mine-video-preview-01.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 542px; height: 351px;" src="http://cdn.buzznet.com/media/jjr//2010/08/swift-mine/taylor-swift-mine-video-preview-01.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br /><br />After listening to the song and discussing the video, we talked about some new vocabulary and idioms from the song.<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"></span><blockquote><span style="font-weight: bold;">To wait tables </span>(v): to serve food/drinks, to act as a waiter<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Rebel </span>(n): a person who acts against authority or does not obey rules<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">To brace yourself</span> (v): to prepare yourself for something difficult or bad<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Flashback </span>(n): A fast, clear memory<br /></blockquote>Then, students wrote and performed dialogues using at least 2 of the 3 new vocabulary words from the song.
